California’s solar costs are twice as high as in many other developed areas, primarily due to outdated permitting and delays. To address this, California passed the Solar Access Act (SB 379) to streamline solar permitting.
Under this act, cities and counties must adopt online, automated permitting for residential solar systems. They can use SolarAPP+ or Symbium for real-time code compliance checks and permits. Grants, up to $100,000, are available to support compliance.
Large cities and counties must comply by September 30, 2023, while smaller ones have until September 30, 2024. Even smaller areas can adopt the software and apply for grants, making solar installation more accessible. California aims to reduce costs and encourage renewable energy adoption through these changes.
